THESIS RESEARCH
The Social Impacts of the Press on London's Irish Population: 1801-1820
Life in early nineteenth century London was difficult under even the best circumstances. For an Irish immigrant, it was doubly hard. The locals of the era were staunchly xenophobic, resentful of Irish labourers willing to undercut Englishmen's wages, and contemptuous of the Pope, to whom most Irish persons, as Catholics, owed allegiance.
We know that the English of this era harboured anti-Irish sentiments. What we don't know is what role the early nineteenth century British press played in developing or perpetuating these sentiments, and what social impact that had on the Irish immigrant population
This study focuses on London, which had Britain's most developed newspaper culture, and its largest Irish immigrant population. The period of enquiry includes the years between the controversial union of the Irish and British parliaments in 1801 to the death of the long-reigning King George III in 1820.
